You know, maybe this joke is deeper and more ironic than any of us realized before. I never actually met someone who said they "got" it, so I figured there was nothing to get. But now I realize, that it is a real joke, in the duality of meaning.

Perhaps when it first became popular, "the other side" was a more common or trendy term for death.
